Continuity sequence: reflection and analysis

For my induction task, we were given the challenge of creating a short film with a set of criteria that we had to meet. This short film was about two people, one of whom had an SD card with "SUPER SECRET STUFF" on it. The other person sees this file and then wants the SD card. The second person takes the SD card and there is a conflict, resulting in the SD card being lost.

In this scene, the person who owns the SD card is chasing the thief in an attempt to regain the SD card. We used a low angle in this to give a more cinematic feel to the whole piece, it also gives a feeling of power to both of the characters. This shot is very effective as it is a good lead up to the main conflict.

In this scene we see the protagonist walking to the door and exiting the room where the antagonist is with the SD card in hand. We used match on actions very well in this piece. It has a good effect as it keeps the pace and it allows the audience to see a continuous flow of action.

In this scene, it shows the antagonist looking at the screen, showing the secret folder. An eye line match is used to great effect in this shot as it shows the antagonist's point of view as he sees the "SUPER SECRET STUFF" folder. We used it so that you get to see from the antagonist's view and therefore it establishes the conflict early on.

In these screenshots you can see as the camera goes from a medium shot to a close up shot. The medium shot shows the costumes and emotion of the antagonist as he looks over the shoulder of the protagonist. The close up shot allows us to see the facial expressions of the antagonist clearly. In this an over the shoulder shot was used to show the positioning of the characters. These were all used well as we now know the location of the characters and it lets us clearly see who is being focused on, showing how they are watching the protagonist.

In this shot, the antagonist is walking quickly down the corridor to intercept the protagonist and take the SD card. This was a good scene as the shakiness of the camera movement allowed us to follow the antagonist down the corridor in a realistic point of view. An over the shoulder shot helps us see the surroundings and how the antagonist is positioned in it.

In the scene above, the antagonist has dropped the SD card and it is going off screen, showing it being lost. An extreme close up of this shot allowed us to see the hand in great detail and clearly see the SD card go off screen.

In this scene the antagonist has dropped the SD card, it has been lost and both the antagonist and protagonist are reaching for it. The scene is fading out to black, showing the end. It was effective as it left in a moment of action, leaving the audience not knowing what would happen next, suspending it in a moment of tension.

Reflecting on this exercise, there were a few techniques that we could have used, such as using lighting to effect and also using an establishing shot. In the reflection exercise that we did, I got a lot of feedback which was helpful. The feedback said that the matches on action were good, it was easy to follow, the close ups were good, as were the camera angles and also the flow of music was good. Criticisms were that the running was not a very well shot scene, the ending was rather abrupt and that the exposure of  a particular shot was far too over exposed.

After completing this exercise, I can safely say that I have picked up numerous techniques and I have learnt how to utilise them in order to effectively use them in making a film. I also learnt how to operate editing software and photoshop, allowing me to adjust how the movie flows, add different effects and help the continuity of the piece. Techniques such as these include not raising the ISO above 400, else it will achieve a grainy effect; putting the shutter speed to double the frame rate, but for a screen it needs to be set to 1/60 fps in order to avoid flickering from the screen.

  1. Hi Raffi,

Good start and some explanation of your understanding of the techniques.

Ensure you define the technique before giving your own example.

Also, make sure you cover all points from the task's brief. Remember I showed you where it is on the media blog?

    Josh.
